How can a financial counsellor help me?

What is a financial counsellor?
A financial counsellor is a qualified professional who provides information, advice and advocacy to people in financial hardship throughout WA. The service is non-judgmental, free, independent and confidential.

No, the services provided are quite different.

A financial planner or adviser provides fee-based, investment advice.

A financial counsellor works with people who are in debt or are not able to meet their ongoing expenses.

Here’s how a financial counsellor can support you.

    1. Free, kind and confidential support.
    2. Information about your rights and options for debts.
    3. Develop a plan for your goals and debts.
    4. Advocate or equip you to negotiate with lenders/debt collectors.
    5. Discuss financial hardship programs, concessions and money-saving resources.
    6. Link you with non-financial services that could provide information and support.

There is no cost to see a financial counsellor.

You can search for a financial counsellor or call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 to make an appointment.

To make the most of your appointment with a financial counsellor, it’s helpful to bring the following.

  • An approximate balance of your outstanding bills/bills.
  • How much you pay in regular expenses like housing costs, petrol, food, insurance etc.
  • Any income you earn.
  • Current bank statements if you have some.
  • Urgent bills or letters about legal action.
  • Copies of contracts for any loans you have.
You may need to see the financial counsellor on more than one occasion, depending on the support and assistance you need. There is no charge for any session.
